An Old Lady, a Treasure Hunt, and a Storage Unit

My grandfather, Bob, was an intrigue to me as a child. As the owner of one of Detroit, Michigan’s finest self storage facilities – he was a successful business man and had a gruff nature that commanded respect. But despite his serious side, he often had a twinkle in his eye saved just for me.

I remember one time, when I was seven years old, he took me for a visit to his work. The storage units were a mystery to me – like giant treasure boxes and as we passed each one, I made various guesses as to what was inside. “A heap of gold?” “An elephant?” “Two elephants?” “A lifetime supply of candy?!” To each guess, my grandfather would shake his head and chuckle at my childish imagination.

We continued on down the row until we came to storage unit B127. My grandfather stopped and looked at me. “Now, Jeremy, this storage unit has something very special inside. Do you think you can keep this secret?” With the most serious expression a seven year old boy could muster, I nodded adamantly – “Yes!”
My grandfather looked at me and said, “Her name is Betty Sue. She’s very old.” Surprised, I wondered why my grandfather had an old woman locked up in storage but before I could voice this frightening thought, my grandfather had already pushed the button to open the storage door.

I cautiously took a step forward to see this ‘Betty Sue.’ The storage unit was empty except for one large ghostly-looking object. My grandfather hit the lights and I could see it was  - a boat!  “Jeremy, let me introduce you to Betty Sue,” my grandfather said proudly. “Betty Sue has been here for many years. In fact, she was the pioneer of boat storage in my storage facility. She is a very old lady.” Remembering my earlier speculation about Betty Sue, I smiled back at my grandfather and giggled to myself.

He continued, “Let me tell you about Betty Sue. She was everything to my dad. He would spend hours in the garage with her, meticulously wiping down her paintwork, and detailing. While other men bragged about their wives – you would often hear my dad declaring Betty Sue to be the finest girl he knew. Many a time my mother and I would hear my dad chatting away – only to discover his silent companion to be Betty Sue herself. A 17’ orange Ebco open bow motorboat – she was my dad’s best friend.

Now for all my dad’s passion for Betty Sue – he was a terrible boater. I remember one time when I was about your age, we took Betty Sue down to the Detroit river. We loaded her up and set off, only to discover a few minutes later that my dad had forgotten to put the plug in. Much to our embarrassment, we found ourselves sinking and my dad made a quick walk of shame back to the shore, water up to his knees, yanking Betty Sue behind him. After a series of mishaps such as this, my dad decided his passion for Betty Sue would have to be left to the land. He would let me sit in the boat and we would have tons of adventures – pretending to escape from pirates, looking for treasure – ah those were some good times.”

We spent a whole afternoon in that storage unit, my grandfather telling story after story – chuckling together about the misadventures of Betty Sue. It is a favorite memory that still sticks with me today. Whenever I pass a storage facility, I find myself thinking of treasure hunts and remembering that old lady locked away in storage.

This story was inspired by the people we know, the stories we've heard, and the things that are most important in our lives.
